Freedom® Primary Knee System

98.3% implant survivorship rate at 10 years1

The Freedom Primary Knee System is the advanced all-in-one total knee arthroplasty solution that gives patients optimal high-flexion motion—up to 155 degrees.

The Freedom Primary Knee, featuring a universal baseplate, is designed to mimic natural knee function and is available in a range of sizes for both all-poly and metal-backed tibial components. It ensures predictably successful and repeatable patient outcomes after primary total knee replacements.

A 10 year study shows patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty with Freedom Total Knee experienced optimum TKA performance without loss due to component failure, deterioration of the prosthetic composite, related complications, loss to follow-up.

Overview

Advanced, Innovative Design Follows Anatomical Knee Function

The Freedom femoral components have been designed to permit flexion of 155°. While reaching higher degrees of flexion is dependent upon patient anatomy, an increasing patient population is requiring this capability. Innovative computer-aided modeling and our years of clinical experience deliver exceptional mobility freedom after orthopedic surgery.

The Freedom Primary Knee System features:

  • 7 radii of curvature manage patellofemoral contact and control femoral rollback and flexion, eliminating the mid-flexion dead spot.
  • Deep anterior patellar cut-out allows for tendon clearance during deep flexion.
  • 5 points of peripheral locking ensure security and reduce potential micro-motion.
  • Six-degree angle of patellar groove assures smooth patellar tracking.
  • Thin anterior flange, minimal posterior condylar resection, and low profile box aid in bone conservation.

Multi-Radii Design: Form Follows Function

The articular surface of the Freedom femoral components were designed to mimic anatomical knee function.

As flexion increases, the radius of the curvature in the sagittal plane must change to accommodate more or less rollback over the available surface.

Tibial Baseplate Supports a High Flexion Lifestyle

Naturally, patients want to comfortably continue or resume their high flex activities after TKA. The Freedom Primary Knee System’s innovative tibial baseplate and associated locking mechanism is key in making that happen because it was designed with high flex as the standard, and not as an afterthought.

Features of the tibial baseplate include:

  • Optimized tibio-femoral conformity in extension while allowing rotational laxity in flexion and minimizing polyethylene contact stresses.
  • Low profile optimized keel in all sizes (30 mm total height).
  • Advanced locking mechanism providing peripheral locks at five places (anterior, posteromedial, posterolateral, lateral and medial).
  • Design that prevents micro-motion of the insert in the tibial baseplate, enhancing joint stability.

Tibial Insert Technology

Medical Congruent

Medial Congruent (MC)

  • 95% sagittal congruency in the medial compartment with reduced lateral conformity to healthy native knee kinematics.
  • Heightened medial anterior lip designed to resist anterior subluxation and enhance mid-flexion stability.
  • Indicated for both cruciate retaining and cruciate sacrificing techniques, offering intraoperative flexibility.
  • PCL relief cutout to minimize impingement when the posterior cruciate ligament is preserved.

Ultracongruent

Ultracongruent (UC)

  • High sagittal conformity to constrain anterior–posterior translation of the femoral component.
  • Indicated for both cruciate retaining and posterior sacrificing techniques, providing versatility in soft-tissue management.
  • Elevated anterior and posterior lips designed to resist femoral subluxation and enhance overall stability through flexion.

Posterior Stabilized

Posterior Stabilized (PS)

  • Post-cam mechanism provides mechanical stability in the absence of the PCL, promoting controlled femoral rollback in flexion.
  • Post geometry designed to engage predictably and reduce paradoxical anterior femoral translation.
  • Optimized post design to balance stability with reduced risk of post wear or mechanical stress.

Cruciate Retaining

Cruciate Retaining (CR)

  • Anatomic articular geometry designed to function with an intact posterior cruciate ligament.
  • PCL Relief Cutout to accommodate native PCL tensioning and femoral rollback.
  • Indicated for cruciate retaining techniques, supporting soft-tissue–driven stability without mechanical constraint.

All Poly Tibial Component

All-Poly Tibial Component

  • Available in both CR and PS configurations, providing flexibility across surgical philosophies.
  • Square keel geometry designed to resist internal/external rotational forces and minimize risk of dissociation from the cement mantle.
  • All-polyethylene design promotes more physiologic load transfer and reduced stress shielding compared to metal-backed constructs.
  • Cost-effective solution that supports modern TKA demands without compromising fixation or durability.
